SOCIAL EVENING  5TH NOV 2011

Members of the Mid Wales and Shropshire Dexter Group met at the home of Bryan Finch and Brenda Cadd for a bonfire and fireworks party. Unfortunately, Bryan could not be with us as he was still in hospital, but it is hoped that he will make a speedy recovery.

We could not have picked a better evening as the weather was fine and dry, if a little chilly. However, we were soon warmed up as the fire was lit and a smartly dressed Guy Fawkes was left to his fate.  At the end of the firework display with cold fingers and toes, we were all very grateful to retire indoors to enjoy a hot supper which Brenda had kindly provided.

DEXTER BEEF FINISHING WORKSHOP 24TH SEPT 2011

The Mid Wales and Shropshire Group organised a Beef Finishing Workshop near Craven Arms, Shropshire on 24th September 2011.    The event was quite well attended as Mike Bancroft gave those present an insight into the finer points of beef production. Sheila Davis kindly brought along a non-short Dexter steer and a short heifer for demonstration purposes but in true Dexter style, they had other ideas and made their bid for freedom - much to the consternation of their owner and amusement of the onlookers - as the next door neighbour appeared and was anxiously patrolling his fence line.  However, with a couple of willing helpers they were quickly recaptured and returned to the pen none the worse for their little escapade.  The afternoon ended with a brief look around the Corvedale herd, followed by a much-appreciated cup of tea and delicious lemon cake provided by our host, David Middlemiss.

Our thanks go to David for a super venue, to Sheila Davis for the loan of her cattle and last but not least, to Mike Bancroft accompanied by his wife Sue for making the workshop possible.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS IN THE WALES AREA

The Welsh Assembly Government are running some cattle health initiatives to combat BVD and Johnes in cattle herds in Wales.  As an incentive they are offering funding for your herd to be tested - you have to pay for your vet to take the blood samples but they will pay for the tests themselves.  To enrol on the schemes you need to apply without delay for the BVD Eradication Scheme ring 01554 748597 and for Johnes ring 01970 625050.
